“The Minotaur theme is one I’ve been working with for over 20 years, the myth is close to my heart and filled with personal symbols. In Greek mythology, the Minotaur is the hybrid child of the Cretan Queen Pasiphae and a majestic bull gifted by Zeus to her husband King Minos. The Minotaur is shunned as a half-breed and made an outcast because of his monstrous form and his reputation for violence and destruction. In my personal interpretation, however, which comes from a more empathetic viewpoint, he is an abandoned and lonely creature, forced to lead an isolated existence within the prison walls of the Labyrinth. With the head of a bull and body of a man, the Minotaur is simultaneously a symbol of potent masculinity and of sensitivity. These ideas of power and vulnerability are explored continuously throughout my work.” – Beth Carter
