African Fragility

Gabriel Moreno
29.5" x 15.75" x 9.5" / 74.9 x 40cm x 24.1cm
Bronze Edition of 4/8

In this sculpture there is a variant in colours between the hair and the body. The colour of the hair was inspired by the African Savanna and throughout the colourings of the whole sculpture, Gabriel has tried to reflect the personality of the vast continent that is Africa. Whilst this continent is so culturally rich, and rich in minerals, it is also so very fragile especially in how it has been manipulated by many other nations over time.

Although there are a multitude of cultural differences throughout Africa, Gabriel wanted to focus on the many African rituals in which the women paint their hair and eyes with white powder, one of the reasons behind the difference in hair and skin colour. It is these rituals and tribes that have also influenced the tattoos on this piece.
