” ‘Hot Tomato’, ‘LOVE’, ‘Pies’ and ‘Target’ are all oil, and 12″ x 12″, I painted these as a series, to possibly, but not necessarily, be hung together. I wanted to choose a different style of model, paired with obvious Pop Art.
‘Hot Tomato’ appropriates one of the best known iconic Pop Art images of Andy Warhol, and his CamPbell’s Soup can series. The ruff collar, with the cropped image of the soup can, adds to the red and white design of the painting. My model has a non-threatening look on her face, although I see a little attitude…she could also be saying, ‘What?’
The title ‘Hot Tomato’ is a term from close to the same time of Pop Art, that meant an attractive, exciting, woman, perhaps unobtainable.”
